Silence.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou heard me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause she\u2019ll need them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I ended the call.<\/em><\/p>\n

That afternoon, Nina arrived at my father\u2019s lake house carrying three boxes.<\/em><\/p>\n

She placed them on the dining table.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is everything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I looked at the boxes.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything we found so far.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I opened the first.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bank records.<\/em><\/p>\n

Second.<\/em><\/p>\n

Property records.<\/em><\/p>\n

Third.<\/em><\/p>\n

Emails.<\/em><\/p>\n

I pulled out one document.<\/em><\/p>\n

A transfer authorization.<\/em><\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s signature.<\/em><\/p>\n

My name was typed beneath it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Controlling Shareholder Approval Required.<\/em><\/p>\n

But there was no signature.<\/em><\/p>\n

My signature had been copied.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s forgery.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nina nodded.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

My hands went cold.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve identified twenty-three so far.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Twenty-three.<\/em><\/p>\n

I sat down.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHow much money?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cApproximately $9.4 million.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I looked at Nina.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the people involved?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWho else?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She placed another document on the table.<\/em><\/p>\n

Melissa.<\/em><\/p>\n

His mother.<\/em><\/p>\n

His father.<\/em><\/p>\n

Two outside consultants.<\/em><\/p>\n

And one name I hadn\u2019t expected.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Andrew Bell.<\/em><\/p>\n

My heart stopped.<\/em><\/p>\n

Andrew was Daniel\u2019s best friend.<\/em><\/p>\n

He had been our wedding photographer.<\/em><\/p>\n

He had been at our anniversary dinner.<\/em><\/p>\n

He had laughed when Daniel called me a freeloader.<\/em><\/p>\n

And now his name was on a transfer document.<\/em><\/p>\n

I whispered, \u201cHow?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nina looked at me.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Andrew has been helping Daniel move the money.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I sat back.<\/em><\/p>\n

For nine years, I had trusted these people.<\/em><\/p>\n

I had invited them into my home.<\/em><\/p>\n

Celebrated birthdays with them.<\/em><\/p>\n

Paid for vacations.<\/em><\/p>\n

Helped their children.<\/em><\/p>\n

And all along, they had been quietly dismantling the company I built.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nina reached into the box.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is one more thing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She handed me an envelope.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was found in Daniel\u2019s private office.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I opened it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Inside was a copy of a contract.<\/em><\/p>\n

I read the first page.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then the second.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then the third.<\/em><\/p>\n

My heart began pounding.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNina.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYes?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is dated six months ago.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThey were planning to sell the company.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWithout you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I kept reading.<\/em><\/p>\n

The proposed sale price was $42 million.<\/em><\/p>\n

My husband had been preparing to sell the company for forty-two million dollars.<\/em><\/p>\n

And the contract contained one sentence that made everything suddenly clear.<\/em><\/p>\n

Upon completion of sale, Claire Morgan\u2019s voting rights shall be terminated.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stared at the words.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then I looked up.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThey were going to steal my company.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nina didn\u2019t answer.<\/em><\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t need to.<\/em><\/p>\n

I slowly closed the folder.<\/em><\/p>\n

For years, I had believed my marriage was the most important thing I had built.<\/em><\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n

I had built something much bigger.<\/em><\/p>\n

And now I was going to take it back.<\/em><\/p>\n

My phone buzzed.<\/em><\/p>\n

A message from Daniel.<\/em><\/p>\n

We need to talk. Please come home.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then another message appeared.<\/em><\/p>\n

I know what you found.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then another.<\/em><\/p>\n

Please don\u2019t destroy our family.<\/em><\/p>\n

I typed one sentence.<\/em><\/p>\n

You should have thought about our family before you made me the biggest mistake of your life.<\/em><\/p>\n

I pressed send.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then I turned to Nina.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow morning?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow morning.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happens tomorrow?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She opened the final folder.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe board meeting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I looked at the papers.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGood.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Because tomorrow, Daniel would walk into the company believing he was still the man in charge.<\/em><\/p>\n

And he had absolutely no idea that every person in that boardroom was about to learn the truth.<\/em><\/p>\n
